If Walls Could Talk: A Semiquincentennial Commemoration

LEARN WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE ON LONG ISLAND DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION UNDER THE BRITISH OCCUPATION.

Judge Isaac Thompson, owner of Sagtikos Manor and a magistrate of the Crown, permitted General Clinton and British forces to use the Manor as temporary quarters during the Revolutionary War. While many residents who refused to swear loyalty to the British Crown fled the area, Isaac Thompson and his family remained in Islip.

Why did they choose to stay? Following the American victory, George Washington embarked on his national tour to visit those who had contributed to the success of the Revolution. On April 21, 1790, Washington spent the night at Sagtikos Manor. Why did he choose Sagtikos? And what role, if any, did Isaac Thompson play in the Patriot cause?

During this event experience the re-enactment of Isaac Thompson, the British military and what life was like during the occupation at Sagtikos Manor. Then you will be asked to sign the Oath of Loyalty. View colonial demonstrators performing their daily tasks, cooking, soap making and candlemaking. Then take a cemetery tour and visit our garden. .There will be plenty colonial activities for the kids.

Are you a Loyalist? The British 23rd Royal Fusiliers will be questioning you on whether you signed the Oath of Loyalty to the King of England. Or are you a patriot? The Culper Spy Ring will be on hand to make sure you understand what freedom from England means.

Adults $15 and children (5-12) $8

George Washington & The Manor

On July 4, 2026, America will celebrate the most important milestone in our country's history—250 years of American Independence.

On April 20, 1790 George Washington spent a night at Sagtikos Manor as part of his tour of Long Island. Our specialty tour, “Washington and the Manor,” focuses on the colonial rooms in which Washington spent time. In addition, and in recognition of Presidents’ Day, we will present some insight, using prints in our permanent collection, into the life of George Washington - who in 1790, at the age of 58, became our first President.

The Talented Major Tallmadge

This PowerPoint presentation explores the multi-faceted Revolutionary War career of Setauket native Benjamin Tallmadge. Tallmadge was an exceptional leader of dragoons, intelligence and counter-intelligence officer, and master of land-sea combined operations. He fought in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, and Germantown, and defended the Patriot population of Westchester from British and Tory depredations. Commanding his own legion, he launched punishing raids on British outposts on Long Island from his bases in Connecticut. All the while he ran Washington’s most continuously active espionage network on Long Island and in New York and played a key role in foiling the Arnold-Andre plot to betray West Point to the British. The program concludes with an overview of Tallmadge’s post war career as businessman and Congressman. Open and free to the public. Light refreshments served.
